Cylinder Design Verification and Registration

Australian Safety Engineers is well equipped to provide a  start-to-finish service, assisting with everything from the initial import of gas cylinders through to the first hydrostatic test and cylinder fill.

In Australia, AS2030, AS2337 and the relevant Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) authorities in each state require that each cylinder has its unique design verified, registered and permanently marked on each cylinder. Purchasing cylinders from an overseas manufacturer and importing them to Australia is a small part of the overall process. A number of steps need to be completed before a gas cylinder can be filled;

Mechanical Design Verification

Mechanical Design Verification is a process that confirms the suitability of any gas cylinder for it’s intended service by looking at the manufacturers drawings, design calculations, raw product test records, cylinder test records and type-testing certification. This information forms a technical data package that is used to verify compliance of the cylinder design against the cylinder manufacturing standard used to design and produce the cylinder. This work is undertaken by a certified Mechanical Engineer.

Design Registration

Once verified, the cylinder design must be registered with the WHS authority in your state. The registration process varies based on the requirements as set out by each WHS authority. The cylinder design, assuming it meets all of the technical requirements, is then approved for testing and filling in Australia. A unique Design Approval number is issued which remains relevant to all gas cylinders produced under the specific design that was registered.

First Test Stamp and First Fill

Prior to any gas cylinder going through its first hydrostatic test or first fill, the Design Approval number must be permanently marked on each cylinder. These markings are accompanied by the registered Gas Cylinder Test Station stamp that applied the markings, to ensure traceability throughout the life of the cylinder.
